The MARM upgrade takes the two main canals of the Huerta de Murcia (25/11/2008)

The Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs (MARM) has tendered through the Directorate General of Water, the adequacy of the draft of the Acequia Mayor Tomas de la Huerta de Murcia (Aljufía and barriers) within Modernization of Irrigation of the Vega Media, whose tender budget is EUR 1,953,497.83 and has an execution time of 11 months.

The aim is to restore the original hydraulic capacity of both channels, which is currently hampered by the entry and accumulation of solids from the river Segura

The performance on these two canals, whose footage was found on the Contraparada (Javalí Nuevo, Murcia) and supplying the rest of canals of the Huerta de Murcia, facilitate more efficient use of water because, first, the introduction of cleaning systems that will reduce the accumulation of these solid shots, and secondly the piping of a section of the canal of the Aljufía, which minimize the existing leaks.

On the other hand, while maintaining the flow derived from the river Segura, is an improvement in the efficiency of its use, allowing a certain increase of the ecological flow of river.

In addition, this project will produce other benefits to the huerta, as the Board of Landowners of the Huerta de Murcia avoid or at least significantly reduce power cuts to existing irrigation at present, the problems of running the tap.

The Marmara, through the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura (CHS), undertakes these works, whose key activities are the placement of automated gates and railings self-cleaning system, because for years the operation of the shots of the two main canals of the Huerta de Murcia had important weaknesses which, by its strategic location, all egantes harmed.

In particular, in making the Aljufía Acequia proceed with the implementation of a cofferdam with riprap (elements that are used to channel water flows), place a set of prefabricated frames; ginning system in the former Cleaners making; replace the two gates, and put the access road.

Furthermore, in the first section of this canal, which runs the open, replaced the CHS booth next to the gate control of drain, to be replaced, run a chest drain, and install a new self-cleaning system and two bars motorized gates.

Also, the basin organization run civil works necessary to have a new take on the Aljufía ditch, where it is the first installment in tube magazine of 2,500 meters and installing a flow meter.

At the same time, the CHS urbanized areas adjacent to the river, creating a recreational area and running a new stretch of road is 35 meters long, which will follow the service road Butte River.

In making the Acequia de Barreras, the Confederation also runs a cofferdam with rubble, replaced the existing Cleaners bars self-cleaning system and change the two gates by a motor drive.

Investment than 45 millions of euros

This is another of the actions being carried out by the Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs to modernize and improve the canals and infrastructure of the Board of Landowners, whose budget exceeds 45 million euros, most of them already made.

In particular, the CHS has intervened on Acequia Aljufía; Turbedal and Sarabia (Sections I and II), Mother of the Alquibla (Section I); Churra La Vieja, Caracol, Zaraiche, Pitarque, Raal New Barriers and Turbedal.
