Murcia will be the first Spanish city to chair the European Mobility over the next two years (07/11/2008)

The city of Murcia in the coming years will be the official headquarters of the largest network of European cities, the so-called European Mobility Forum (Eurocities).

Founded in 1986, Eurocities provides a platform, which belong to 30 European countries and more than 115 cities to its members to share knowledge, exchange experiences, to discuss common problems and develop enterprise solutions through forums, workshops, projects, activities and events.

EUROCITIES voices in Europe, to be in dialogue with European institutions on all aspects of EU legislation, policies and programs that have an impact on cities and their citizens.

The network is active across a range of policies including:

Cooperation: Government and international cooperation.

Culture and Education and Social Affairs.

Information Society.

Economy: Economic development and cohesion policies and provision of public services and jobs.

Environment, Transport and Mobility.

The last European Mobility Forum, which gathered the evidence Murcia as headquarters, was organized by the City of Vienna a few days ago and hosted a variety of presentations from various European cities on feasibility studies, working groups on mobility policies, energy and sustainability, and seminars to influence the development of mobility in Europe.

The Forum welcomed the election of the President where, unanimously, the city of Murcia was chosen.

The Mayor of Murcia, Miguel Ángel Cámara, expressed his satisfaction at the nomination and faces the enormous challenge aware of the hard work facing the city from having to defend the interests of European cities before the Commission and the European Parliament.

Murcia will have its first official ceremony in The Hague in a month, when it will kick off the biennial work agenda, where Murcia offers his commitment and contribution to the debate on urban mobility in Europe.

Mayor House announced that it is "a clear commitment to promote sustainable urban mobility in the cities of southern and eastern Europe, who want to follow the good practices implemented by their counterparts in cities in central and northern Europe."

Murcia concerning mobility

Murcia, which will soon have its new Urban Mobility Plan, a new Energy Plan and the Bicycle Master Plan, has been working hard in recent years to achieve the status that is recognized today by giving the Chair of this Forum Europe.

This position of privilege, will defend positions and policies of mobility, being beneficial to all European cities, to adapt to the idiosyncrasies and peculiarities of the cities of South East Europe, among which is Murcia.

The city of Murcia as Chair of this Forum, are the cities of Grenoble, as Vice President.

Mobility Forum also includes four working groups, which follow the standards set in the Action Plan prepared by Murcia conjunction with the Department of EUROCITIES.

This plan will close shortly.

These working groups will be led by Murcia and coordinated by the following cities:

1.

Energy Efficiency and Climate Change: London.

2.

Road Safety: Copenhagen.

3.

Urban Dimension of International Accessibility: The Hague.

4.

Developing a New Mobility Culture: Grenoble.

From now on, Murcia faces a major challenge.

The chair of this Forum has a mandate period of 2 years.

It is only the first time a Spanish city holds the title, but one of the few occasions when southern European cities chairing the Forum, had done, Vienna, Leeds, Genova, Palermo, and Copenhagen in the past years.

Better quality of life

Thanks to this privilege will advance in the management of mobility in our city, to share and improve our knowledge, while we make sure our voice is heard in policy debates.

The great challenges that entails Mobility is a challenge, especially in urban areas, one of the objectives of the President of Murcia, raise and implement all feasible solutions, managing mobility demands always in line with environmental protection .

Chamber Mayor explained that it is essential that "the quality of life in cities is as high as possible.

This is why we have to think together and develop policies for efficient and sustainable urban mobility. "

In his view, "European cities are very different, but they face similar difficulties, having the responsibility to find common solutions.

Murcia defend a European urban mobility strategy to meet the expectations of our fellow citizens. "
