Dark Sky participates in the Week of Science and Technology (07/11/2008)

Note from Dark Sky:

Dark Sky will be on the Week of Science and Technology, which develops in the gardens of the Malecon of 6 to 9 November, allusive posters exposing the problem of light pollution and distributing informational materials and schedules than the 2009 campaign.

It is unacceptable the current situation of waste and ostentation light and from the campaign warned of its severity, given that we occupy one of the first places where light pollution in the Peninsula.

Turn claim that the government take decisive and urgent solutions and principles defended by the Dark Sky Campaign, which encompass the scientific study and the most advanced European standards have already been fully reflected in European policy than range.

The importance and value a quality night environment has for science and technological development have been recognized, for example, the declaration of the International Conference in Defence of the Quality of the Night Sky and the Right to Observe the Stars.

It makes no sense to light the sky on the basis of designs and lighting concepts technically flawed, and crude, it is absurd to illuminate the sky as what is needed is to illuminate the ground.

Also, do not focus light where it needs is an act so unwise as not to choose the right light intensity in each case as an area illuminated atmosphere can be more insecure and obviously more unpleasant than a reasonably lit area.

Dark Sky Astronomy stresses that have marked the history of science and cultural perception of the world as well as observation of the sky is a source of new scientific achievements and technological benefits, as well as key industrial projects for industrial high technology and high added value.

Without a quality night environment, which can only be achieved through intelligent management of lighting, milestones such as the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), a Spanish initiative, they had never seen the light.

Does our citizens have no right to enjoy and investigate the firmament?.
