Students of the University of Murcia share accommodation with young people with intellectual disabilities (22/10/2008)

The University of Murcia and the Down Syndrome Foundation (FUNDOWN) signed today at the Chancellor an agreement by which students from this institution will share accommodation with youth with intellectual disabilities.

The program, included in the agenda of the "School of Life" and the home network of the Foundation, is the novelty, in the words of its chairman, Peter Otto, that students voluntarily share housing as mediators with other young people with intellectual disabilities, making those models of life for the disabled.

"This collaboration, Otto said, will benefit both users Fundown, to the extent that they can lead an independent life and independent, as students of the University who is hosting the program, which will gain additional training to its curriculum human training.

The University of Murcia, through the Social Screening Service and Volunteerism, will be responsible for managing applications from students who will be enrolled in at least second career can benefit from elective credits while Fundown allocated an amount equivalent to the cost of university accommodation to participate as mediators.

The rector, José Antonio Cobacho showed pride in collaborating on an initiative that is an important step towards integration and demonstrates that the university "is more than research or have high academic indicators."
