The City Council evaluates the menus offered in municipal services (08/10/2008)

The Department of Health and Human Services evaluates the catering facilities offered by the City of Murcia (Meals on Wheels, Day Centres for the elderly, nursery schools canteens ...) to ensure food and nutritional health of its users.

Health is evaluating the menus with the assistance of the Department of Food Technology, Nutrition and Food Science, University of Murcia.

Sensory tests are being conducted, nutritional and hygienic sanitation of dining services.

The goal is to certify the quality of food and monitoring of the Mediterranean diet.

According to the data handled by the Department of Health, Murcia has a prevalence of overweight among the highest in Spain and consumer surveys warn of departure from the pattern of the Mediterranean diet.

The groups most at nutritional risk are children and the elderly.

The Department of Health has as a strategic intervention to promote and protect the health and nutritional food.

At present actions are being carried through the Comprehensive Plan for the Promotion of Healthy Eating and Physical Activity.

In 2005, the City Council endorsed the 'Declaration of Santander' by the Federation of Municipalities and the Ministry of Health adopted the National Strategy NAOS (Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Prevention.)
