The Region of Murcia has today a pioneer in geriatric care to patients of cystic fibrosis and other respiratory diseases, located in the hamlet of El Palmar Murcia near the Hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca, which has been built on a plot given by the city of Murcia.
The president of the Community, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, accompanied by the Minister for Social Policy, Women and Migration, Joaquín Bascuñana, and the Minister of Health, María Ángeles Palacios opened the Respiratory Physiotherapy Center, sponsored by the Community and Association Anti Murcia CF.
In this new space, said the president, "can be applied all the latest in respiratory physiotherapy and develop applied research in this field, making it the only center of Spain of its kind to provide treatment multidisciplinary disease. "
New research in this field to be developed at the Centre will be in collaboration with the University of Murcia.
The budget for the construction of this facility amounts to more than one million euros, of which the Autonomous Community, through the Ministry of Social Policy, Women and Immigration provides 851,000 euros, and the rest is funded through agreements and grants from the Ministry of Health and contributions from the Association to Combat Murciana Cystic Fibrosis Foundation ONCE.
The Cystic Fibrosis Association of Murcia carries out its duties since 1987.
In the region there is a hundred people affected, many of them children, and recorded about 12 new cases per year.
Cystic fibrosis is a degenerative disease, chronic, inherited condition that affects mainly the lungs and digestive system.
To maintain control of the disease, people with cystic fibrosis need permanent care, with continuous treatment for pulmonary and gastrointestinal complications, routine checks at the hospital and a full commitment on the part of patients and their families.
