The Ministry of Sustainable Development and Planning, through the Directorate General of the Environment, has eradicated an infestation of Cochineal Carmine (Dactylopius Genus) affecting the stokers in the Rambla de La Alberca, a member of the Regional Park Carrascoy Valle.

The general director of the Natural, Rodrigo Borrega, said "This has been the scourge of the insect in the area of the Rambla de La Alberca as a measure of control and protection, to prevent its spread to other parts of the Regional Park.

Preserving the natural environment of the region from attack is a priority for the Department. "

The actions undertaken arising from the strong involvement of cochineal were the stokers (Opuntia Ficus-indica) in the summer of 2007.

The insect was not only detrimental to this plant but also annoying for the people who stand by night arrival attracted to light and left red spots, similar to blood, non-toxic acid carmine.

After the appearance of the pest, the stokers had an advanced state of deterioration, found many dead on the floor, so that experts from the Directorate General determined necessary clearance and avoid outbreaks of fire and insect breeding.

The decision was also adopted because it is an invasive species occupying areas devoid of vegetation hindering the growth of native species there.

This will set the boot or short, since the burning was dangerous and there is no authorized plant protection product that is effective to treat the plant.

In addition, the rugged terrain forced the works were made largely by hand.

One measure taken was the immediate access to the bed of the ravine, so the machine could access the maximum number of plants affected at the bottom, where they were established in dense communities on the slopes devoid of pine forest.

In areas of moderate difficulty of access was extracted mechanically for the most part and then manually reviewed to leave no residue.

Work in areas of high and extreme difficulty were performed manually, using the machinery for collecting the remains deposited on the riverbed.

The project, implemented over an area of 1.89 hectares with a cost of around 30,000 euros, ended with the burial of the waste generated at a distance of ten kilometers.

"There have been a basic containment measures to eliminate dead drainers residues have also served as preventive measures against forest fires and outbreaks of other insects breeding.

Carmine Cochineal is a dangerous species, but is an invasive species of the drainers and is necessary to control its dense population to preserve the balance in the Regional Park of El Valle and Carrascoy "said Borrega.

Origin of cochineal

Carmine Cochineal is originally from Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Chile, and feeds primarily on liquids from reaching drainers eliminate the production of figs and kill the plant.

The female is removed dye color that gives the name, carmine, has limited mobility and is about six millimeters.

In contrast, the male is smaller than 2.5 mm, and is winged.
