'From the Mediterranean to the Andes' delves into the similarities between the two cultures (10/07/2008)

The Director of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage, Enrique Ujaldón, this morning presented the exhibition 'From the Mediterranean to the Andes' to remain in Murcia Archaeological Museum until 14 September.

The exhibition explores the links between Mediterranean and Andean culture, as well as the changes of meaning that has experienced over time.

The presentation was also attended by President territorial Caja Mediterráneo, Angel Martinez, one of the curators of the exhibition and deputy director of the National Archaeological Museum, Felix Jimenez.

Ujaldón stressed that "the exhibition notes how cultural flow occurred between the two sides of the Atlantic and the proof is the reinterpretation of some European parts of the Andean culture."

Through the 144 pieces in the exhibition shows the different meanings of works that, despite having common roots, have taken different symbolic values.

From the sixteenth century established a deep relationship between the cultures of the Mediterranean and Andean America.

At this time began an intense exchange of traditions and indigenous roots, African and Spanish which led to a new time.

'From the Mediterranean to the Andes' is an analysis that seeks to discover the legacy that has traveled from the Mediterranean to the Andean world, learn how these civilizations, the result of different cultural processes earlier contributions that were adopted over time, adapted to their needs and transformed his image to make up the hallmark of this part of the American continent.

The exhibition begins with a presentation of the characteristics of both cultures and is divided into nine themes: 'The Mediterranean', 'The dream of memory', 'The meaning of things',' luxury items', 'Changes in everyday life ',' How to convert the heathen? "," liturgical instruments, 'and' Hybrid beings. "

Through the 144 pieces that make up this show attempts to delve into issues such as iconography, the astronomical calendar, the rituals of religious festivals and their meanings, traditional fiestas of Moors and Christians, or Waca Waca-runs bulls.

In this exhibition, working with Caja Mediterráneo Spanish institutions such as the Archaeological Museum of Alicante (MARQ), the Casal de Sant Jordi, Jose Felix Llopis Foundation, the Museum of Costume and Ethnological Research Centre, University Foundation for Archaeological Research and The Alcudia various private collections.
