Non-human primates used by the University of Murcia for scientific purposes in good health, according to findings of thesis (04/07/2008)

The nonhuman primates at the University of Murcia used for scientific purposes in good health, according to a doctoral thesis presented at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine by Nuria García Carrillo and has obtained excellent cum laudem.

This research also served to create a design and evaluation of a facility for these primates, and to establish a surveillance protocol.

This protocol has allowed to maintain a state of health of these animals "very adequate."

The dissertation also dealt with the monitoring of a total of twelve females of reproductive age, between 2001 and 2007 and concluded that reproductive function improved significantly when these primates are housed in the Farm Veterinary.

The data suggest that the fertility rate increases, while decreasing from 24 to 13 months, interpregnancy interval and also reduces the number of abortions.

The research also developed a protocol for determining paternity using genetic markers in order to avoid problems of inbreeding.

The dissertation was directed by Manuel Guillermo Ramirez Vidal and Francisco José Pallares Martinez.
