Martínez-cache header dump opposition to Orihuela, near the hamlet of Zeneta (25/06/2008)

The Councillor for Environment and Urban Quality, Adela Martinez-Cacho, has held meetings with both the headman of Zeneta, Salvador Cánovas, as environmental Platform Zeneta against the dump and decided to lead the opposition to the construction of landfill Orihuela.

According to the mayor, "the City Council will use all legal channels so as not to deteriorate and affect the quality of life of Murcia, to be blunt on this issue."

The landfill will be built by the UTE Cespa-Ortiz, in an area known as Gun, bordering the municipality of Murcia.

According to a report by the council, the choice of this area for the location of the facility does not meet the proximity principle established by the Area Waste Plan XVII Zonal (published in DOGV of April 28, 2005).

The point chosen is the closest to the main focal points of waste which will force some municipalities to move their waste by the MU-301.

Also not taken into account any environmental condition in the municipality of Murcia, in regard to natural areas, hydrogeological conditions and condition of the population.

A short distance from the site chosen for the landfill is the Black Cabezo where is the salt of the Boquera of Tabal, contained in the inventory of wetlands in the Region of Murcia and is the only wetland in the municipality.

They have mapped several habitats of community interest, also in the Sierra del Cristo, very close to the chosen location.

The recent Law 42/2007 Natural Heritage and Biodiversity undertakes to take steps to prevent damage.

As City Council is obliged to safeguard the integrity of these areas, the report considers that "there is a real danger to the chosen location for the landfill since any problem that may occur to the management of leachate end affecting the salt marsh."

Has not been taken into account the recommendation of Zonal Plan to locate these facilities to over 2,000 meters of urban land and building land.

Murcia General Plan establishes a bag of developable land within a thousand feet of the site chosen.

Therefore, according to Martinez-Cache "does not mean that the location of these facilities which pose a significant environmental risk and will serve another autonomous region, we decided to get away as possible from population centers to which it is to service and is located near the town of Murcia, with our population and territory that is more exposed to potential problems that may occur. "

In any case "we mean that the location of the plant and the Vega Baja landfill may not be final until such time as the procedure is performed environmental impact assessment, mandatory for such projects under the provisions of Royal Decree 1 / 2008, Decree 162/1990 of the Generalitat Valenciana and the Royal Decree 1481/2001 "

The councilman added that "pursuant to Article 8 of Legislative Decree 1 / 2008, the environmental agency must consult the public authorities concerned, and obviously the City of Murcia is the public most affected by this project.

We therefore hope that this consultation be done before continuing with the various formalities required for the construction of the landfill "
