Adesga Sustainable Development and assist in the protection of the populations of owls in the world (17/06/2008)

The Minister of Sustainable Development and Spatial Planning, Benito Mercader, and the president of the Neighborhood Association to promote the sustainable development of Puerto del Garruchal (Adesga), Antonio Soler, this morning signed a cooperation agreement to undertake joint awareness and preservation of the Special Protection Area (SPA) Monte del Valle and Altaona saws and Escalona, a real owl reserves in the world.

Recent studies by the Ministry of Sustainable Development on the population of owls in the SPA Monte Valley and Sierras de Escalona Altaona and indicate that the number of breeding pairs of this species is above 60, representing a population density of 38 pairs per 100 km2.

These data show that it is one of the highest density of owls in the world.

Remember that it is estimated that the global population is 3,000 owl pairs, of which between 140 and 170 live in the region.

In particular, the Ministry gives Adesga 20,000 euros to develop conservation actions of this natural area, closely linked with the population of owls, and in promoting environmental values, scenic, cultural and ecological and inform neighbors in the area about the benefits and opportunities that living near an area belonging to the Natura 2000 network.
