Two gardens Sangonera Ronda Sur and the Green will feature the first 'leisure gardens' (11/06/2008)

Having a garden in the town center.

This is the opportunity provided by the initiative of the Department of Environment and Urban Quality, under the name of 'leisure gardens'.

This project is to allocate plots within municipally owned gardens to be grown, preferably fruit and vegetable varieties in the garden of Murcia.

The first two sites to be allocated to crops are located in the garden of Ronda Sur (along with the Pintor Almela Costa) and the Green Sangonera.

The first covers an area of 2,562 meters square is divided into ten orchards.

The second measures 1,267 meters square and is divided into six gardens.

Both have non-potable water irrigation.

Those who want to take over some of these gardens may apply at City Hall from next Monday until July 8.

Although you can join any adult Murcia, preference will be pensioners and early retirees.

The documentation to be submitted is a copy of the ID, the certificate of registration and documentation, if any, stating the condition of retired or taken early retirement.

The 16 plots were awarded by lottery on 28 July.

Have two phases: the first part only retirees and retirees and, if there are beds available, there will be another draw with the other applicants.

Those selected will use the land allotted for a period of one year.

The products obtained from the orchards will be used exclusively for the consumption and seed multiplication of local varieties.

Cultures were performed in organic farming system in order not to handle hazardous pesticides and to guarantee respect for health and the environment.

Although the choice of crop will be free, will prioritize the use of traditional varieties of Murcia.

The people who cultivate these gardens of leisure will have the expertise to help grow the traditional varieties recovered, selecting productive varieties and best qualities, choose the best quality seed, seed multiplication of endangered varieties and establish a breeding program.

With this new project aims to maintain the agricultural landscape and crop-associated biodiversity, providing a leisure activity for retired persons or early retirement to help improve their physical and psychic space and serve as informative with improved knowledge of the origin and the evolution of the garden.
