The Mayor of Murcia, Miguel Angel House, has asked the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Jacques Rogge, giving the Castilian more IOC official language, alongside English and French.

The Mayor has indicated that the Castilian or Spanish is now the mother tongue of more than 500 million people, 6% of world population, compared to 8.9% of people who speak English and 1.8% of people francophone.

It has also been declared the official language in countries like Brazil and Portugal and the United States, with about 40 million Spanish speakers, is the second most spoken language.

62% of college students selected as first choice.

On the other hand, Castilian is the official language of work in over 250 leading international organizations.

Castilian, in the opinion of the mayor, also an official language of the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) and language of 21 National Olympic Committees, plus more than 800 national sports federations.

The extension of this language throughout the world advised to be considered, alongside English and French an official language of the International Olympic Committee.

This will extol the rich multilingual reality of our planet and, above all, facilitate the exchange of ideas and concerns of 23 National Olympic Committees, including Brazil and Portugal, thus eliminating restrictions of those who have to do today in languages they are unfamiliar.

Miguel Ángel Cámara adds that equally, including Spanish language in official documents and activities of the IOC sports such organizations facilitate the development and understanding of them, save time and expense, assist the functioning of the organization of the various commission and important institutions such as Olympic Solidarity, World Anti-Doping Agency, International Council of Arbitration or the Court of Auditors Deportivo.

The request of the Mayor of Murcia is in addition to the one made at the time by the Cuban Olympic Committee president, who flagged the proposal to give the Spanish the official language category.
