The City Council gives green light to the restoration of the popular Malecón Lion (17/04/2008)

The sculpture of the Lion of the Malecon, which was taken off the plane in San Francisco during the construction of the footbridge Manterola, will undergo a thorough process of rehabilitation.

Murcia City Council initiated the recovery of the piece a couple of months, identifying the sculpture in a warehouse Archaeology Center at the University of Murcia, located on the campus of Espinardo.

The Lion was dismantled, numbered parts, and form of preservation was adequate.

The Mayor of Murcia, Miguel Ángel Cámara, then requested the assistance of the Directorate General of Culture to address the recovery of the work.

In his letter, House warned that the state of the piece, according to several local reports, shows a significant decline, the result of the poor quality of the stone used in its composition as well as by erosion.

However, the historical and sentimental value of the work recommended for restoration.

Thus, concluded the Mayor, consolidating the remainder of the piece, could be exhibited in the Museum of the city.

The former director general of Culture, José Miguel Noguera, supported at the time the mayor's proposal and start the paperwork for the transfer of the part to the Restoration Center of the Autonomous Region, where it will be restored on the orders of its director, Francisco López Soldevila.

The restoration process has now been restored and driven by the new Director of Fine Arts and Cultural Assets Ujaldón Enrique, who has shown interest in recovering this piece for the enjoyment of all Murcia.
