Murcia City Council, through the Department of Environment and Urban Quality has drafted a manifesto on the occasion of International Earth Day.

It reaffirms the commitment to promote concrete measures to achieve a reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases through four areas of action, developed by the Local Agency for Energy and Climate Change (ALEM) municipal energy , transport and urban mobility, building and urban planning, education and public awareness.

In addition, we highlight various different objectives pursued:

-Understand and analyze energy consumption and emissions of greenhouse gases in the municipality of Murcia.

Develop an Action Plan to reduce the energy consumption through the incorporation of renewable energy and encouragement of the use of more efficient energy technologies in our town.

-Reduce emissions of greenhouse gases expanding natural sinks of greenhouse gases by planting 12,000 trees in the municipality and energy saving measures in municipal activity.

-Raise awareness and public awareness for the causes and consequences of climate change through information campaigns.

Furthermore, in the manifesto is recalled that in 1999 the Council signed the Aalborg Charter (to incorporate the general principles of sustainability into all areas of municipal activity), in 2001 supported the Local Agenda 21 (which contains strategies for the achievement of sustainable development of the municipality), while in 2005 it became part of the Spanish Network of Cities for Climate (to promote local policies for combating climate change).
