The Council offers training for caregivers of dependent elderly (08/05/2008)

The Department of Social Welfare, Gender Equality Policies and Citizenship, directed by Maria del Carmen Pelegrin, is launching a training project for carers of older people with special health needs.

To help family members caring for elderly dependents, the City Council has published a guide with tips and offers free courses for carers.

The City will publish 7,000 copies of the guide 'Manual for caregivers of seniors with special needs,' and will offer 24 courses to be held in Murcia and hamlets.

So far, courses have been conducted: Corvera, La Ñora, San Andrés, El Ranero, Beniaján, Puertas de Castilla, Barrio del Carmen, San Anton, Algezares, The Esparragal, Espinardo, Santa María de Gracia, St. Pius X Zarandona, El Palmar, Bacons Bridge and Llano de Brujas, and 210 people participated.

The remaining courses will be held this year.

The 7,000 guides will be distributed in more than 200 points in the municipality as health centers, senior centers, women's centers, municipalities and autonomous region.

The Consistory has invested 230,000 euros in this project.

In the course guide and develop topics as the psychology of caregiver, care for the caregiver, access to social welfare resources, psychological and physical resources for the caregiver's personal welfare, psychology of older people, basic needs of the elderly, WC and personal hygiene, accident prevention and first aid, movement and postural hygiene in older people, ethics in elderly care (right to dignity) and legal aspects of care for older people.

The courses are addressed to people of any age who are in charge of caring for an elderly person.

Each course has 10 sessions, a total of 30 hours, and the maximum number of attendees is 15 people per group.

The teachers are professionals in the areas of psychology, social work and health.

To register for courses must complete a form and submit it to the Department of Social Welfare and Equality Policies and Citizenship.

These initiatives are within the Social Action Plan for Older Persons in the Region of Murcia 2005-2007, the Department of Social Welfare and Equality Policies and Citizenship of the City of Murcia, in collaboration with the Institute of Social and Murciano the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, through the IMSERSO.

The objective of this project is to foster carers in maintaining good physical and mental health, promote responsibility of all members of the family in caring for the elderly, providing a meeting place for people with a similar situation way to exchange experiences and encourage the support between caregivers and caregivers provide the knowledge necessary to understand the needs and characteristics of older people to meet their needs from a general standpoint.

The City of Murcia has been providing services to older people with personal care needs for over 25 years (Home Help Service), which over time have been complemented with other services, telecare, transport subsidies for people seriously affected their mobility, alternative housing programs (aid to help and coexistence between generations), day service placement, family respite and Meals on Wheels service.
