San Cayetano boosts recovery of Murcia palaces and walled (19/05/2008)

The countdown to Murcia recover a significant part of its historical heritage and at the same time, build one of the biggest tourist attraction claims of the future.

The Mayor, Miguel Ángel Cámara, along with the Minister of Tourism and Consumer Affairs, Jose Pablo Ruiz Abellán, and Councillor for Tourism and Conventions, Maria Isabel Valcarcel, presided over the ceremony of laying the first stone of the new Visitor Center St. Cayetano, one of the most charming spots in the municipality.

Murcia Tourist Consortium Crossroads is the promoter of this project, which is conditioned by the archaeological remains located near the church of San Cayetano to be visited, turning the square into a new Visitor Center.

The work, which will be executed by Intersa, according to project architect Andrés Cánovas, has a budget of 2,278,000 euros and a lead time of 2 years.

The Visitor Center will provide support to expose the parts that have been resulted from the various archaeological excavations, to present the history of the valley and orchards of Murcia, palaces and walled enclosures and host their own cultural activities of such centers.

The building will be generated around the Plaza de la Ermita de San Cayetano, which embraces her in value.

Beside the shrine is located about archaeological remains of Roman road, the recent discovery, linking Cartagena Fortuna.

This location has great archaeological interest because it is more intuited the presence of Roman and Arabic (XI).

Direct contact with the history of Murcia

The Visitor Center creates an area around the square up from the floor to allow views of the Castle and the Vega de Murcia, and to protect and cover the remains of the Roman road, and to mark the entrances to the building.

The ground floor is seen as a continuation of the pavement of the plaza into the building and is essentially open, causing a steady stream to the outside.

Meanwhile, the first floor appears as an entirely autonomous landing on the square and is shown as a separate object.

On the ground floor there is the proper service program this type of building: access control, shop, screening room, bar and cafeteria, etc.

All these spaces are in continuity with the outer courtyard, with closings practices that allow this plant to be fully open to the Plaza.

On the first floor takes place throughout the exhibition program itself: Roman room, living first settlements, Arab room, the garden room and room for future action (consolidation, accessibility and restoration of the castle of Monteagudo.)

It also plans to reserve a space for facilities, terrace and staff offices.

In the center of interpretation, the public will have a first contact with the history of the city and its various historical episodes.

Visitors can make the building a historical-geographical thanks to the elements around which develop the center (the remains of the Roman road, Castillo de Monteagudo, Vega de Murcia ...).
