A study of the UMU claims that pollution in the city of Murcia is "worrying but not alarming" (09/12/2015)

A group of the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Murcia (UMU) has conducted a study on air quality in the regional capital which reveals that pollution levels in the city center "are worrying but not alarming".

The report, which assesses the environmental concentration of ozone and nitrogen dioxide, gaseous pollutants related to vehicle traffic, recommended control measures to overcome at some points the limit values laid down in national legislation for these gases.

Research attributes the causes of pollution to increased fleet, the massive use of fossil fuels (especially diesel) in recent decades and unfavorable geographic and climatic conditions of the area.

The findings include proposals to improve air quality in the city, such as cycling and pedestrian movement control measures to avoid traffic jams, encouraging car sharing, enhancement of electric vehicles and utility vehicles groups, especially if the latter do not produce emissions.

The research group is composed of teachers and Antonia Baeza Miñana Augustine and Maria Soledad Ruiz engineer.
