The doctoral thesis at the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Murcia by Juan Antonio Buendia Sanchez noted in its conclusions that the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of a country is insufficient to measure the welfare of its citizens.

He affirms the thesis that if happiness is the ultimate goal of any government, the indexes that reflect the leaders should serve to channel their policies towards achieving it.
In the study, Buendia Sanchez has analyzed the three indices of happiness internationally considered most relevant, two of them relating to UN programs and the other to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
The dissertation was directed by Professor of the University of Murcia Maria Peñaranda Ortega.
