The City Council will help companies to calculate their carbon footprint as part of the plan of action against climate change Murcia (28/11/2015)

Knowing the township's vulnerability to climate change is essential to develop a plan of action committed, realistic and applicable to combat the challenge of the adverse effects of climate element.

This is the first stage of the roadmap provided by the City to plan appropriate for future adaptation of the municipality to sustainable development strategies.

Two basic pieces are the starting point of the plan: the development of "vulnerability assessment", which assesses the current and future climate impacts due to the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and climate predictions, using algorithms, They define the characteristics of the climate until 2100.

In this work the Department of Planning, Environment and the City of Murcia Huerta, who heads Antonio Navarro, who will launch the open participatory process to develop the Plan of Action against Climate Change.

One of the immediate initiatives will be holding meetings in January "Act against Climate Change", aimed at medium and small companies in Murcia to help them calculate their carbon footprint, delivering to it the necessary tools to do so.

The Mayor reiterated the will of the City Council to keep Murcia as "leader in the fight against climate change," fulfilling the agreements of the European initiative "Mayors' Adapt", arising from the Covenant of Mayors, which Murcia signed in 2014, In order to adapt the cities and educate its citizens so that they can know and mitigate the effects of climate change.

Murcia and was the first city in Spain to express interest in the Covenant of Mayors in 2008 and committing to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases by 20 percent by 2020. Similarly, it was also one of the first cities in developing its Plan of Action for Sustainable Energy, PAES, with aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change by reducing CO2 emissions measured.

The faces climate

The visit made this morning by the Mayor, José Ballesta, to "The faces of the weather," an event organized by the New Partnership for Climate Culture in the Campus de la Merced of the University of Murcia, is part of the commitment of the City to endorse and support public awareness initiatives aimed at promoting a more environmentally friendly environment.

Accompanied by the president of the association promoting activities, Antonio Soler, councilors and municipal groups, the Mayor tour of the stands located in the courtyard, where they shared space recycling workshops, panels, films, exhibitions and alternative mobility, among other proposals.

At the end of the visit, signed the Regional Manifesto on Climate Change.

The initiative has been organized in a couple of days before the start of the XXI International Conference on Climate Change (cop21) which begins Monday in Paris.

The event is presented as a decisive and culminating milestone in the process of combating climate change in recent years, because of this summit will be new national and local commitments, on which the city of Murcia is already working.
