The regional government and the city of Murcia join forces to give a boost to the area of ​​logistics activities (08/11/2015)

The ministries of Public Works and Infrastructure and Economic Development, Tourism and Employment, through the Institute of Development of the Region of Murcia (INFO), have agreed with the city of Murcia work together for the realization of development studies and projects necessary for the implementation of the Logistics Activities Area (ZAL) of Murcia.

To do this, two separate committees have been constituted Management and Monitoring, Management and Technical, to promote and maximum coordination of projects required to realize this area of ​​business expansion, as demanded by the food and logistics.

The Minister of Public Works and Infrastructures, Francisco Barnabas, the Minister of Economic Development, Tourism and Employment, Juan Hernandez, the councilor of Promotion of the City of Murcia, Roque Ortiz, and the councilor of Planning, Environment and Murcia Huerta consistory Antonio Navarro, presided over a meeting with their technicians to advance this project teams.

Specifically, the Steering and Monitoring Committee will comprise representatives of the Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructure Development Institute and the City of Murcia.

This group will be responsible for defining the strategy management and project development will be in charge of making joint decisions and actions and results validation.

Meanwhile, the Technical Committee will be responsible for coordinating continuously developing technical, administrative and financial activities of the project and will establish a permanent structure for the duration of the project.

Thus, representatives of the Community in the Management and Monitoring Committee will be the director of the Institute of Development of the Region of Murcia, the director general of Transport, coasts and ports, the general director of Planning, Architecture and Housing as well as the general secretary of the Ministry of Public Works and infrastructures, will be its general coordinator.

By the City of Murcia, they will be integrated into the Development Committee and councilors Planning, Environment and Huerta.

Regional development

During this meeting, the directors of Development and Economic Development and Council of Development and Planning discussed the temporary commitment of the project to the Regional Administration has agreed with the European Commission, on the basis of which the latter granted a grant of nearly one million euros, within the first call for the Mechanism 'Connecting Europe'.

This represents 50 percent of the more than 1.9 million euros matters conducting development studies and projects necessary for the implementation of the Logistics Activities Area (ZAL) of Murcia.

The holder of Development stressed "the enormous importance for regional development and the ZAL should represent for freight traffic in a region that has always been characterized by its export basis, with regard to the fruit and vegetable sector".

Francisco Bernabé recalled that "in the first phase, which will take place over the next two years, the implementation and administrative handling of territorial, environmental and urban projects to the final implementation is necessary and in the new railway terminal for the exchange freight and intermodal logistics platform for national and international distribution of the food and industrial sector. "

This first phase of the two plants, totaling approximately 43.5 million euros, is planned to be put into service by 2020, as is outlined in the Work Plan of the Mediterranean Corridor, and the project schedule Global high to Brussels (which includes all phases up to 2025).

For his part, Minister of Economic Development, Juan Hernandez, stressed "the great interest by companies in the food and logistics industry, whose expansion plans, which are being taken up in the moment, when economic indicators are beginning to take the upward trend and consumer confidence slowly begins to recover, provide new investments in logistics centers that allow them to more efficiently meet market needs. "

Also, the Minister Hernández said exports in the Region of Murcia during 2014 meant 38.4 percent of regional GDP, representing an increase of 11.6 percent over the previous year (compared to 2 , 5 percent in Spain).

Of these exports, worth 10.377 million euros, 33 percent were for food products and, of this amount, 75 percent fruits and vegetables, fresh and frozen products.

Studies to perform

The action taken by the European Union contains adequate projects for territorial integration of the performance, coordinating investments and urban development through the development of a Regional Action Program and a Special Plan for Planning and Infrastructure, for what counts in collaboration with the different administrations and especially the City of Murcia.

In the same way, it includes the development of construction projects connections to road, rail and services, and implementing the projects themselves Intermodal Terminal and Logistics Center.

Finally, the development projects of the different phases of the ZAL, which enable the construction of ships and logistics facilities, and studies to define the model of Promotion and Management, Cost Benefit Analysis and Business Plan includes Terminal ZAL and in its different phases to their development through public-private partnerships.

The ZAL of Murcia is provided on an area of ​​1.9 million square meters in Economic Complex, West dotacionales and Industrial Activities.

This joint strategy seeks to achieve a multimodal logistics system to ensure connectivity across all transport systems, roads, railways, ports and airports, to optimize the functioning of logistics chains and to respond to the increasingly demanding needs of companies.
