The City and the Autonomous Community become the environment in the greater San Esteban space tourist and cultural attraction of the city center (23/10/2015)

Both governments agree together on a strategy which will add value to the archaeological site and restore public public use of this urban space, which will be equipped with new pedestrian areas and leisure.

The city recovered for Murcia a central and emblematic enclave where emerge a large square of nearly 13,000 m2.

The actions planned, covering an area of ​​23,000 m2, also include the recovery of the Church and the Palacio de San Esteban, which is open and can be visited.

The estimated budget of 15 million, of which the next plenary address the approval of an item of 4.9 million euros.

The enhancement of the archaeological site of San Esteban and recovery for public use Garden San Esteban and the urban environment, with the addition of the palace and church are the outlines of the plan designed by the City Council and the Autonomous Community, which lead the creation of greater space tourist and cultural attraction of the city center.

The work, which has exposed this morning the Mayor, José Ballesta, and the Minister of Culture and Spokesperson, Noelia Arroyo, allow to value the archaeological remains and transform a strategic space in a landmark of Murcia.

The great value of the archaeological remains requires us to restore, preserve and recover for citizens while offering a new, more attractive, livable and comfortable for residents' public space.

The performance that arises is not limited to the scope of the site, which covers an area of ​​12,400 m2 and was declared BIC in 2011. The strategic plan is more ambitious and affecting a total of 22,600 m2, the area also include Palace San Esteban 2775 M2, 1300 M2 church and the surrounding streets (Jerome de Roda, Acisclo Diaz, Portillo de San Antonio and Alley Burruezo) 6100 M2.

The Ballesta Mayor explained the features of the project that will push that will make it possible to create a large open public square, about 13,000 m2, compatible with conservation and research site, which can be visited in the future neighbors Murcia and visitors as well as the church and the palace of San Esteban.

The performance of urban integration will involve the creation of new pedestrian areas, elements of leisure and green spaces, and measures of environmental improvement and revitalization of local commerce.

Commission experts

The development of a strategic project of great singularity necessarily mean following a rigorous procedure to ensure the legality, the correct treatment of the archaeological remains and the participation of the municipality.

With these premises, the instrument chosen to run the program is the adoption of a master plan, which will be tendered in the first quarter of 2016. Its production will be assisted by a group of experts to advise on all archaeological aspects and tourist and cultural promotion, and to be invited to the consultative institutions (universities, professional associations, international organizations ...).

The overall cost of the plan amount to 15 million euros, of which the plenary of the Corporation next week will consider the adoption of an initial budget of 4.9 million euros, and arranged by the City.

In addition to funding from the Autonomous Community, the cooperation of the Ministry of Culture and European funds may also be required.

Joint action, developed in coordination by local and regional authorities, will be reflected in an agreement to be signed in the coming weeks.

Being a major project and continuing the line of transparency and citizen participation of the government team, the transformation of the site and the environment San Esteban will take place on the basis of consensus, participation and transparency.
