"Olive oil slows the progression of breast cancer" (24/09/2015)

The Catholic University of Murcia celebrates today the second day of the First International Conference on Olive Oil inaugurated yesterday, and who are participating in leading institutions and industry bodies.

The director general of the Food Industry (Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment), Fernando J. Burgaz, gave the keynote address in which he noted that in recent years there has been a decline in the consumption of olive oil in Spain "with increased oils of lower quality";

and it has clarified that "logically" the economic situation in recent years has affected it, but notes that this is not the only aspect.

"We must fight more for ourselves also we realize the quality of what we have."

It has also compared the olive oil sector with other food industry, to show the need for this first to innovate.

"The reflection that the industry has to ask is whether we can continue with current policies and practices or the time has come to follow the wave of other food sectors," he noted.

Authentication

The head of the Department of Lipid Characterization and Quality Institute CSIC fat, Manuel Leon, focused his presentation on one of the main concerns consumer product authentication.

It has therefore ensured that these face a rigorous regulation and control, "normally is met."

In this respect it has stressed that "sometimes is not that the law is not met, but this may prove to be incomplete, or change more slowly than the requirements and the needs of consumption"

In the morning session also they intervened two Reps in the CIDAF;

its director, Alberto Fernandez, who has lectured on the composition of olive oil;

yy coordinator of Scientific Research, Antonio Segura, who has focused his presentation on the bioactive compounds in Olea europaea.

Breast cancer

"Olive oil slows the progression of breast cancer."

This statement will rotate the paper which will give this afternoon Eduard Escriche, member of the multidisciplinary Group for the Study of Breast Cancer and researcher at the Department of Cell Biology, Physiology and Immunology at the University of Barcelona.

To prove that it is based on research conducted for over 30 years and have allowed them to characterize some of the complex molecular mechanisms of action that make it possible.
