Environment distinguishes Murcia for their projects promoting bicycle (22/09/2015)

The measures implemented by the City to enjoy a sustainable and respectful with the environment Murcia, especially regarding mobility policies, have earned the highest recognition among Spanish cities.

The Mayor, José Ballesta, today received the Award of the Spanish Sustainable Mobility Week, presented by the Secretary of State for Environment, Pablo Saavedra.

Three actions promoted by the City Council have led to the recognition of these awards, granted by the Government of Spain through the Ministry of Environment: implementation of the system of public bicycle rental MUyBICI, Murcia 30 Plan and the creation of a Municipal Observatory of the Bicycle (OMB).

"It is an honor to the entire city, not just the City," said Ballesta, because in his concession has been decisive leadership of cycling as a mode of transport and, above all, social involvement achieved through the OMB , composed of members of the municipal corporation, technicians, representatives of the Office of the Bicycle, user associations, citizens in defense of sustainable mobility and companies in the field of development and promotion of cycling associations.

MUyBICI regarding its operation approaches bicycle citizens with a modern, flexible and economical service.

In its first three months 2,500 users, who made 70,000 applications were registered bicycles.

Its creation responded to the interest of the City to promote the use of bicycles as a means of efficient transport and reduce the use of private vehicles.

On the other hand, interest in improving road safety and protect cyclists and pedestrians in traffic open areas led the City Council to design the Murcia 30 Plan, based on the European model of "quiet zone", which consisted of the establishment 8 zones in the city center where there are streets subject to this speed limit, properly equipped with vertical and horizontal signaling.

The third measure that has earned this achievement Murcia Gold Medal of the SEM has been the creation of the Municipal Observatory of the Bicycle, a consultative body of the City Council aims to promote the use of bicycles, emphasizing road safety users, integration into the urban structure and its promotion at all levels.

The ceremony of the Gold Medal was held this morning at the Ministry of Environment and, along with the Mayor, councilors also attended the Development and Traffic, Security and Civil Protection, Roque Ortiz and Lola Sanchez, respectively.
