The City will implement measures to ensure the safety of cyclists in 27 areas of the municipality (18/09/2015)

Depending on the type of roads, enhance existing solutions such as signaling, searching alternative cycle routes, connecting existing bike lanes, build segregated bike lanes or slow down motor vehicles are proposed

After carrying out an extensive and detailed study of accidents involving cyclists in Murcia, the City already has a map with points of greatest concentration of mishaps in order to implement measures to ensure the safety of cyclists.

This report is part of Project Mobisec 'mobility initiatives for sustainable European Communities, and has been produced by Urbamusa who has studied the places, the severity and frequency of accidents from 2010 to the present.

Now, with all these conclusions, the various actions will be explored in the Bicycle Observatory to study the feasibility of each of the works

Now, the Councillor for Traffic and Public Safety, Lola Sanchez, explained that "once made this fieldwork, we will analyze this study to establish a comprehensive plan of action that, through horizontal and vertical signs, traffic light regulation and other elements, improve road safety for these specific points to avoid accidents. "

The ten points of the town where you need to work to improve road safety are:

- Avenida Juan Carlos I: most bicycle accidents was against motor vehicles so the vertical signs warning vehicles will intensify access the avenue or to abandon one of the perpendicular streets intersecting points in which accidents occur

- Don Juan de Borbon Avenue: vertical and horizontal signs will also intensify at crossings between the bike path and the perpendicular streets, thus improving the safety of the rider.

- Avenida Miguel de Cervantes: In certain sections of the avenue there are parking in battery which vehicles must back out with little visibility, which may result in dangerous situations against both cyclists and other vehicles that pass through the avenue.

It is remarkable that in accidents consisting vehicles have always been involved motor vehicles.

The solution, according to the study, is to project a segregated traffic or reduce speed of vehicles in addition to studying the possibility of modifying existing parking bike path.

- Avenida Primero de Mayo - Ronda Levante: This area has several lanes in each direction of traffic, high traffic intensity, high-speed vehicles and roundabouts so a segregated bike lane will be screened.

- Walk Lieutenant Flomesta, Ronda de Garay and Mayor Jorge Palacios: Supports traffic intensive supports, has several lanes.

The execution of a segregated cycle lane road traffic by itself Butte Segura river or through the gardens of the avenue is also planned

- Avenida Pio Baroja: It's an avenue that does not support traffic intensity so high but agree not signalized intersections and traffic lights and the presence of parking in battery.

The possibility of eliminating one of the lanes of motor vehicles for the implementation of a segregated bike lane, because the existing sidewalks not allow the inclusion of a bike path because of its narrow width will be studied.

- Tower Romo Street: Supports a very high traffic intensity to the large number of regular buses with stops added.

With few geometric dimensions of the street can not propose or even segregated bike lane on the sidewalk, which are very narrow, so the only viable option is to find an alternative route for cyclists can be safer.

- Calle Industria: It is a street with high traffic intensity and to give access to the railway station of El Carmen, there is great movement for her large number of private vehicles in addition to buses and taxis.

It is convenient to segregate a bike lane on the sidewalk.

- Road to El Palmar: there is high traffic intensity, high-speed vehicles, large numbers of heavy vehicles, several lanes in each direction of movement ...

With no space to include a bike path segregad alternatives are proposing measures to slow traffic and alternative routes.

- Road Sewer: Same as above po0r typology which is planned to create alternative routes and measures to reduce the speed of vehicles.

The study also includes performances in 17 districts routes:

- Road B-3 / Calle Juan Carlos I / Reina Sofia (Guadalupe)

- RM-303 / Mota left river Segura (El Raal)

- Alicante Road / Highway Monteagudo

- Avenida Ciudad de Murcia / RM-301 (Los Ramos)

- Calle Mayor (Torreagüera)

- Road Reguerón (Torreagüera)

- Vereda Captain (Bacons Bridge)

- Calle Mayor (Bacons Bridge)

- Avenida Reino de Murcia / Engineer Joseph Joy (Zarandona)

- Street School (Beniaján)

- Road Tiñosa (Los Dolores)

- Carretera de Santa Catalina

- Road to El Palmar

- Calle Mayor (Aljucer)

- Lowering the Cresta del Gallo (The Pool / San Jose de la Vega)

- Constitution Square (La Nora)

- Road Fuensanta

According to the typology of these streets, different solutions as enhance existing signaling find alternative cycle routes, connecting existing bike lanes, build segregated bike lanes, reducing speed of motor vehicles is proposed.
