The Region of Murcia presented during 2014 one of the highest rates of entrepreneurial activity in the country (06/07/2015)

The GEM (Global Entrepreneurship Monitor) Report 2014, which was presented this morning at the University of Murcia, puts the rate of entrepreneurial activity in the region at 6.67%, representing an increase of 1.37 points to 2013 and higher than the national average, which is 5.47% percentage.

The directors of the team that prepared the study in the region, teachers Antonio Aragon and Alicia Rubio, explained that this increase in TEA is due mainly to the number of initiatives are being launched (springs, 0-3 months), passing from 2.8% to 4.32%, compared to the stagnation of new initiatives (3-42 months).

Teachers warned in the report that the consolidated data of entrepreneurs in 2014 (7.5%) is the worst in the series since 2006, although it is higher by 7% than the Spanish average, reflecting lower difficulty consolidating entrepreneurial initiatives in the region of Murcia in the rest of Spain.

TEA increased in the region during 2014 has been associated with improvement in the financing of entrepreneurial initiatives, with higher seed capital requirements and increased support from foreign private investors.

The GEM study of this issue highlights the dominance of companies created to take advantage of opportunities (58'3%) and reducing to 36'3% of the initiatives that arise for reasons of necessity, indicating a trend reversal regarding what happened in recent years and a foretaste of improvement of the general economic situation.

Another indication of positive developments in the economy is 1.5% effective rate of closures in 2014, the lowest figure in the last four years.

Among the causes of abandoning the business, "unprofitable" with a 40'6%, is the most frequently mentioned by respondents, followed by "financial problems" (21.1%).

Regarding the socio economic characteristics of the entrepreneur, 50.7% of these initial phase (nascent and new) are women, above the average of Spain, which is 41.5%, while in 2014 the proportion grows of entrepreneurs with university studies.

The report also addresses the perceptions and entrepreneurial skills of respondents.

In this section, a 22.3% of the population believes that there are good business opportunities in the region of Murcia, confirming the increase observed since 2012.

As regards the type of entrepreneurial initiatives recorded during the study year, the 47'2% are located in the consumer-oriented sector (for the first time since 2009, it is below 50%), followed by 27 % of the service sector and 22% of the processing sector.
