Researchers from the universities of Murcia and La Coruna studying several vulnerable species of sharks and rays (27/05/2015)

The research group Marine Ecology and Conservation at the University of Murcia, directed by Professor Jose Antonio Garcia Charton, has carried out work to the study and conservation of two species of rays (Raja undulata and Raja montagui) and two species of small sharks (dogfish and spotted dogfish).

In this research, conducted by the group of Marine Resources and Fisheries of the University of Corunna, it was marked diversity, abundance and breeding of different species in the marine reserves of fishing interest of Cabo de Palos-Hormigas Islands in Murcia and the estuary of Cedeira in La Coruna.

The species studied, which are particularly vulnerable to the impact of human activity, mainly to pollution and overfishing, are included in the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources).

The results obtained will serve to take protective measures and fisheries management for the recovery of stocks and the sustainable management of resources.

Project researchers called RELAS have had the support of fishermen and sport divers in the study areas, which proves, according to Professor García Charton, "the commitment of artisanal fishermen for the sustainability of resources and protection of those species that are vulnerable. "

RELAS is managed by the University of La Coruña Foundation and funded by the Biodiversity Foundation under the Ministry of Agriculture, and the European Fisheries Fund.

The study also assist the Aquarium in La Coruna and Cartagena Fishermen and Cedeira, and has the support of the Organization of Producers of Galicia and the National Federation of Fishermen.
