Lorenzo Olarte, former president of the Canary Islands, now participates in a panel discussion on the autonomic state to mark the centenary of the UMU (18/03/2015)

Within the series of lectures at the Faculty of Law, organized by the students, and against the backdrop of Centennial College is now beginning to commemorate celebrated today one of its flagship event, the roundtable "Autonomous State: Past, Present and Future ", which will be attended by Lorenzo Olarte Cullen, president of the Canary Islands and adviser Adolfo Suarez during the transition.

The event also will feature the professors of Constitutional Law and Political Science Luis Muñoz and Antonio Garrido Gálvez Blonde, respectively.

The event ,, various aspects of this stage is treated as representative as well as other issues more related to their present and recent past, such as funding and influence in the crisis, their viability, the controversy over its possible evolution an entirely federal model as well as other issues related to peripheral nationalism or special economic regimes, such as Basque Country and Navarre, and the possible economic inequity encountered with the rest of the country in this regard.

Lorenzo Olarte entered the world of politics in 1973, and from May 1974 to 1977, was president of the Provincial Association and the Cabildo Insular de Las Palmas.

It was founded with the Union Fernando Perdomo Bergas Canaria Party, of which he was elected its president.

This match was integrated in UCD in 1977. In that year he was speaker of the "Law for Political Reform", with the doors to the present Constitution and consolidation of Democracy and Monarchy in Spain after the death of General opened Franco.

He also was appointed by the Council of Ministers Ambassador of Spain in the Republic of Venezuela, a position he would resign to work with Adolfo Suárez, first constitutional President of the Spanish Government, who later became his counselor in the work of the Transition to Democracy.

He was also a founder, along with the aforementioned Suarez and others, the Political Party DEMOCRATIC UNION CENTER (UCD) whose Executive Committee always part.

Between 1979 and 1982 he was president of UCD in the Canaries, and member of the National Political Council of the party.

On June 22, 1986 he was appointed Vice President and Minister of the Presidency of the regional government of the Canary Islands, chaired by Fernando Fernández Martín and December 27, 1988 was elected president of the Canary government replacing mentioned Fdez.
