José Luis Mendoza: "Worth the effort to help the athlete" (29/01/2015)

The project funded by the European Union and led by the UCAM (Developing and Innovative European Sport Tutorship model for the dual career of athletes - ESTPORT-) has started with the initial meeting between representatives of universities and institutions involved: Catholic University of Murcia (Spain), Leeds Trinity University and Europe Limited Community Foundation (UK), University of Thessaly (Greece), Università ta Malta and Università degli Studi di Roma "Foro Italico" (Italy).

During the day, he has worked on laying the groundwork for a project that will last thirty months and that will be to develop and transfer the new model sports tutoring UCAM at other universities.

José Luis Mendoza, president of the UCAM, has received the representatives of the participating universities and thanked the confidence of the European Union for the Catholic University lead this project: "It's very important're seeing is here going unheard. . Our model is unique in the world because it combines support to amateur and professional athletes. This requires an effort from the entire university and it seems that the representatives of these universities in the UK, Malta, Greece and Italy are very interested in but not easy to implement it and to help the athlete so you can combine studies, training and competitions requires establishing a system of special tutoring. And then there is the financial support for the athlete to have a livelihood.

In addition, the president of the UCAM stressed that "worth this effort by athletes and why this university is recognized worldwide for what you are doing for the sport. It is also good for Murcia as its name sounds at world for what we're doing. "

These first meetings have served the representatives of universities and institutions involved to put on the table the most important points of the project.

Antonio Sánchez Pato, dean of the Faculty of Sport of the UCAM commented that "one of the key pieces is the sports tutor. It is close to the athlete person who has contact with the coach and provides access to notes, you Fits dates of examinations and uses new technologies so that there is direct communication. It must also be sensitive to the needs of the athlete and know that it is very difficult to combine both races ".

Precisely at this point is more interested in which are shown most universities participating in the project.

For example, Julie Brunton, of Leeds Trinity University made it clear that his main objective would "try to reconcile academic life to the sport, like trying to reconcile research sport".

Meetings of this first meeting will continue tomorrow to stop profiling the way ahead over the next two and a half years of the project.

The exchange of ideas and practical application of all that is proposed will result in a 'white paper' that will mark the way forward for any institution that wants to apply the model of tutoring for athletes.
