Environment launched a system for identification of plants and trees through a QR code (27/01/2015)

The Department of Environment, who runs Adela Martinez-Cache, has launched a new system for the identification of trees and points of interest in gardens through QR codes.

This initiative responds to an interest in integrating new technologies in the visit and understanding of a garden.

This is a new way to get the citizen or visitor information to answer questions that may arise when walking through a garden.

It also implies a way of awakening the interest of the younger segment of the population, in which the domain smartphone usage is totally indisputable.

This project aims to disseminate information on the gardens (location, species, natural, cultural, historical and landscape);

and awareness of environmental and social importance of urban public green space, preservation and care.

It is also intended to facilitate and encourage access to knowledge of unique flora, native, natural importance, etc.

Not from a perspective of scientific knowledge in the botanical field, but from the understanding of the singular values of each species and its importance as exemplary in our green spaces.

It also seeks to encourage respectful attitudes towards the environment, and in defense of the preservation of biodiversity in urban areas, and promote communication situations, meeting and exchange between visitors and users of the gardens.

The operation of the proposed system is based on the use of QR (quick response codes), elements that store data by creating dot matrix codes.

Each species and landmark of the itinerary will be labeled with a code whose reading is linked to a URL address on the website of the Department of Environment of the City of Murcia.

This URL contains all the textual and graphical information about the species or landmark.

Thus, the information is structured attractions in response to the questions "what is this", "what's here," generating a "story" to go chaining points along the proposed route.

Furthermore, information on the woodland is based on explaining three basic points: a curiosity about it, a brief explanation of its origin, and its main features without entering botanical concepts of complexity (for this we offer links to other web pages, in "for more").

Structure information of all species in the same manner allows the reader to quickly make comparisons between them (to distinguish what is indigenous to what is not, what is perennial that is outdated, etc.).

To explain the operation of the system to all visitors to the garden, an information panel is located at the entrance thereof, in which we find the overview of the garden, and a plane in which all points of interest are located and labeled the route to follow is proposed for the visit, and all species of trees labeled.

Under the slogan "we suggest you visit this garden in a different way" all necessary to read a QR access information and explanations are.

In total labeling have been 20 points of interest (10 on the Malecon and 10 in the Salitre) and 132 trees (78 in the Malecón and 54 in the Salitre).
