Murcia IU-Greens introduced a motion in defense of patients with hepatitis C and their right to be treated (27/01/2015)

Councilman IU-Greens in the city of Murcia, José Ignacio Tornel, has filed a motion in Parliament next Thursday on behalf of people affected by hepatitis C and their right to receive treatment in the public health system.

Tornel has indicated that patients affected by hepatitis C have spent months demanding the government funding of an antiviral drug called Sofosbuvir, whose effectiveness has been demonstrated, but the multinational that sells it imposes a "extortionate price" for this product.

Thus, the Ministry of Health "is not funding treatment and since the adoption of the same by the European Medicines Agency has registered 4,000 deaths of patients who could have benefited from their use."

According to the mayor, the government "has not done enough to ensure treatment and have not used the tools available to them to lower the price of the drug and guarantee the right to health care for these people."

The initiative of IU-Green calls the session of Murcia to urge the Central Government to make the necessary arrangements for the issuance of compulsory license Sofosbuvir and authorize the supply of this product by manufacturing generic, setting a sustainable price for public coffers.

It also requires the Executive's Office to withdraw his resignation to the import of generic produced under compulsory license in third countries to import drugs if generic production under compulsory license held in Spain is not sufficient.

IU-Green has also called for the establishment of private patents on products that are developed as part of research funded by public institutions is prohibited.
