María Luisa Poncela, General Secretary of Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry of Economy and Finance, today took part in the lecture series "Seminars Rector" with a speech in which he expressed his vision of the strengths and weaknesses of research in Spain.

For the lecturer, who was presented by the Vice Chancellors and Francisca Bernardo Cascales Thomas, you are missing more private investment in R & D and more public-private cooperation.

Commenting on this point, Ponce noted that public spending on R & D is at the European average, but the private sector has to double its spending on research and development for the country to reach European standards.

In this sense, the general secretary of the Ministry stressed that, while in Spain scientific production is relocated to the ten world, ranking European innovation appears in a modest 16th place, indicating, in his view, not We're doing fine knowledge transfer.

From the Region of Murcia, María Luisa Poncela has referred to the importance of its public universities as sources of knowledge and the strength of its productive fabric as tools to get the regional R & D (currently 0.83% of GDP) reaches the Spanish average (1.3%).

Ponce has also analyzed in his lecture the state of Spanish universities, of which pointed as the main weakness localism.

The speaker particularly stressed the huge transformation that entails the technological revolution we are living, which has led to a pass to an open linear model of innovation and force a new commitment by the university and society to respond their new demands.

This lecture is an initiative of the rector of the University of Murcia, José Orihuela, to encourage debate on key issues affecting the Spanish public universities.
