The University of Murcia wins the Telefónica Ability Awards, the highest award in the field of accessibility (13/01/2015)

The University of Murcia has been recognized as the Best Public Sector Organisation in Telefónica Ability Awards, the Spanish edition of the main award in the field of accessibility and integration of people with disabilities, which were delivered yesterday at the headquarters of the company in Madrid with the presence of Queen Letizia.

The rector, José Orihuela, received this award that recognizes the work carried out by the Service to Diversity and Volunteerism (AdyV) of the University of Murcia, the Spanish higher education institution with the highest proportion of students with disabilities in their classrooms, with over 1,000 in this course, all with free registration.

Since 1998, year of the creation of this service, several of its programs have been innovative nationally and implemented by other Spanish universities, such as the Notes program for the voluntary support notetaking students with disabilities, or Tutor Program helps these students by older peers.

Similarly, Murcia University was the first regional public institution to conduct a general study of accessibility of all facilities to address the deficiencies found.

Also, the University of Murcia was also one of the first in a firm commitment to the use of tablets and smartphones as educational tools for students with disabilities, especially in access to virtual campus and monitoring of classes.

At present, this institution has earmarked more than 170,000 euros of its budget to ensure equal conditions of students with disabilities in their classrooms.
