Enrique López: "Terrorism is the greatest concern and the main threat of the century" (26/11/2014)

On the occasion of the First Conference on International Terrorism and security in southern Europe that have been held this 25 and 26 November at the Catholic University of Murcia (UCAM), the Spanish judge Enrique López López made clear in his presentation "Legal Framework combating terrorism in Spain and in our European environment 'that "terrorism is the main concern and the main threat of the century" because it poses a serious threat to the security of the country and the lives of people around the world.

In addition, he also explained that "can cause so much terror as a conventional war" since it is one of the most serious threats to peace and international security threats.

He also commented that terrorism poses one of the greatest violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms and the fundamental principles of democracy and respect for the rule of law.

"Its purpose is to cause crime against society to cause fear in it or to put pressure on the government of the country concerned," he said.

López López insisted that terrorism has undergone an evolution that starts with state terrorism that became very common during the French Revolution (1789), along with anarchism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century and ending with his transformation phenomenon National internationally, primarily as a result of the attacks of September 11, 2001 in the United States and the March 11, 2004 in Spain.

In turn, stressed that has been key "cooperation among States to help prevent" a fact that was a reality since the Amsterdam Treaty signed in 1997.

It introduced in Article 29 of the Maastricht Treaty an explicit reference to the fight against terrorism, thus allowing Member States to adopt common positions and fight more coordinated way against this phenomenon.

Moreover, according to López López was essential to create the European Arrest Warrant and delivery, for example for some members of ETA were moved to Spain from Franca, and the emergence of bodies such as the European Police Office (EUROPOL ) or Eurojust.
