Researchers at the University of Murcia advance knowledge of autologous stem cell (06/11/2014)

A team of researchers from the University of Murcia, in collaboration with scientists from the University of California, has discovered that a molecule regulating immunity is required for the formation of hematopoietic stem cells.

These results, which were published in the journal Cell, one of the highest impact to biomedical level, have found in zebrafish, which is used as a model to study human diseases, and serve to advance the research of autologous stem cells.

Specifically, this group investigates some molecules called cytokines, which "are the messengers of the immune cells," said Victoriano Mulero, Professor of Cell Biology, University of Murcia;

and one of them, tumor necrosis factor, is involved in inflammatory processes and infections of the body.

Now, the team has discovered that this molecule is essential for the formation of hematopoietic stem cells during embryonic development of the zebrafish, using "complex regulatory mechanism" that could be viewed through the transparent zebrafish.

Scientists have analyzed how the hematopoietic stem cells, which are only formed during embryonic development both in humans and in zebrafish occur.

Then remain in the bone marrow and are responsible for the formation of all blood cells in our body.

"Millions are produced daily and are very important from a clinical point of view, since many diseases that affect the production of blood cells are known," adds Professor Mulero.

"The results reveal new therapeutic targets for the treatment of these diseases and help generate hematopoietic stem cells in vitro facilitating autologous and thus avoiding the complications associated with transplantation of healthy people," he adds.

The study of the doctoral thesis by Raquel Palazón Espín, under the direction of professors from the University of Murcia and Jose Meseguer Victoriano Mulero.

Also involved in the same research group of Dr. David Traver, University of California, researchers and educational institution Murcia Diana García Moreno and Sergio Candel.
