The garbage we throw into the marine environment damaged economies, kills wildlife and has a big impact on communities, the health and safety of humans.

"A lot of scientific studies worldwide show that we are already suffering from the impact of marine debris," said Rolleri.

"Knowing about the type, composition and quantity of marine debris is essential to develop and propose policies based on objective information translated into numbers and percentages," says the researcher.

According to the expert, this data can help companies improve the technology or the materials used in their packaging, and even modify or reduce packaging material.

They also help to make the general public aware of what it means to dump waste where it should not, dispose of them properly, opt for recycling or adopt behaviors that promote waste reduction.

This is an activity organized by the European Environment Partnership Agreement (EPA) and promotes sustainable development initiative, with the Department of Legal Foundations of Constitutional Order and the State Science and Culture Unit of the University of Murcia.

It also has the support of the Ocean Conservancy (OC), the centennial of the University of Murcia (CENTUM) Excellence and Campus Mare Nostrum (CMN).
