Murcia adheres to the initiative of European cities against climate change (16/10/2014)

Murcia has again put the head of European cities committed to leading the fight against climate change and adaptation to cope with its effects.

In this case, this task has been channeled through the adherence to the "Mayors Adapt" initiative, whose ceremony was held this morning in Brussels, convened by European Commissioner for Climate Action, Connie Hedegaard.

Municipalities will not be alone to deal with this challenge, since the European Union, based on the Covenant of Mayors-at Michelangelo Chamber acceded in 2008, making it the first Spanish Murcia gave this step- capital, provide funding to carry out the necessary measures to ensure the adaptation of cities to climate change and mitigate its effects.

80 mayors have come to Brussels to attend the event, which also involved Margareta Wahlström, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Disaster Risk Reduction, and Christiane Figueres, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, exchange commission UN climate.

The "Mayors Adapt" initiative, born within the Covenant of Mayors of the European Union as a decided advance in the fight against climate change, wants to promote the alliance of governments and European citizens to reaffirm the commitment of the people in this task.

For Murcia, the significance of winning the fight climate change becomes larger due to the extreme temperatures reached, water scarcity, severe droughts and increasing the danger of forest fires.

The European Commission has put in the service of Mayors Adapt initiative called the European Platform for Climate Change Adaptation through the Alliance for Climate entity with which the City of Murcia is already working.

This platform will support and enable the sharing of resources, strengthen ties between the signatory cities and have valuable information for each local planning strategy.

The local strategy of Murcia

Murcia, through the Covenant of Mayors, became one of the first cities in Spain to commit to 20-20-20, which is to reduce their energy consumption by 20%, increase the use of renewable energy to 20 % and reduce emissions of greenhouse gases also in the same proportion, 20% by 2020.

The City of Murcia, GER through its Local Agency for Energy and Climate Change, under the Department of Environment, once again demonstrates its leadership and commitment to energy efficiency and combating climate change, stating their intention to be one of the first European cities, and therefore the first Spanish city to be part of this innovative and important European initiative.
