Birth of a new baby shark at the Aquarium of the University of Murcia (29/09/2014)

Her name is Monica, and he was born on August 26, the day of the feast of Santa Monica, the daughter of the couple of white tip sharks who delivered last year at the Aquarium her sister Bernarda.

The baby, who is in perfect health and fed hungrily in the same tank where your sister will be moved shortly, assigned by the educational institution, the Aquarium of Madrid.

The puntablanca reef sharks are small (usually no longer than 1.6 m long) and easily recognizable by its slender body and short but broad head, as well as tubular appendages along the nostrils, eyes oval with vertical pupils, and white-tipped dorsal and caudal fins.

Rarely assault humans, but sometimes they get too close to swimmers for examination.

However, they can bite the harpoon fishermen to try to steal their catch.

This shark species has been declared as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), because their number is decreasing with increasing unregulated fishing throughout its territory.

In addition, the slow rate of reproduction of the species and their preference for a specific habitat also makes it fragile to overfishing.

This time both the copula, which happened in the month of September last year, such as childbirth were videotaped (http://www.um.es/prinum/index.php?opc=noticias&ver=672).

The recording of the birth was made possible thanks to the collaboration of the Puertas de Castilla, who made available to the research team Aquarium surveillance cameras ready for the event Cultural Center.
