Speaking prize: Debate Club of the University of Murcia semifinalist "World Debating Championship" (26/09/2014)

Students Sergio Hernandez and Pilar Melero Losantos Rodríguez, tutored by Professor Luis Gálvez, semifinalists have been representing the University of Murcia in the World Debating Championship held this summer in Mexico DF, between July 26 and August 4.

Participation in this activity was made possible through the sponsorship of the Regional Assembly of Murcia, the Law School and Classroom Debate at the UMU.

With over 200 debaters from 14 countries, is the most important in terms of competitive debate and universities in countries speaking tournament.

Students of the University of Murcia, qualified for the finals after a previous phase of a total of 200 participants from 14 different nationalities, were measured against the best speakers Spanish-speaking world.

This is the best result of the Debate Club of the University of Murcia in its five years of existence.

This Club, led by Professor of Constitutional Law Luis Gálvez resume operations on 29 September.

Interview with Sergio Rodríguez and Pilar Melero

P: How did you get the Debate Club team at the University of Murcia qualify for this CMUDE conducted and how their preparation?

R: We got to qualify through a year of intense work.

During the past year we went to several national tournaments, getting semifinalists become one of them and also organize a national debate in the Regional Assembly of Murcia.

As a result, we achieve the organization of CMUDE let us compete this year giving us a grant of 90% of registration fees and accommodation.

The way we cover the sponsorship of the Regional Assembly and the University of Murcia, namely the Faculty of Law.

Without the institutions we would not have gotten anything.

P: What topics are discussed in this latest edition?

R: We discussed everything.

Since the import ban on products made with child labor, through the promotion of nationalist symbols, control of natural resources by the state until the creation of paramilitary groups to combat narcotráfico.-P: How he managed to reach the UMU team to the semifinals?

R: We did it through great effort and many sleepless hours practicing.

For us to be in this position is an honor, because we felt a responsibility to be representing the University of Murcia and the Region.

P: What is the added value the experience of being debater?

R: Being debater is to be a special kind of student.

Curious, Competitive, educated, informed and eager to excel and face any challenge that life throws at you.

Being debater is being able to spread your mind while you persuade.

P: What activities and Debate Club challenges arose for the academic year begins?

R: We will organize the National Parliamentary Debate Tournament.

Also continue training the new students with free speech classes every week using the knowledge we have acquired over the years.

Finally, we'll go more national leagues, organize lectures, and work to try to win the next World Championship, to be held in Colombia.
