IU-Greens brings to the House redistricting water service (24/09/2014)

The municipal group of IU-Greens in the city of Murcia has filed a motion in Parliament tomorrow requesting the creation of a task force to explore the possibility of assuming the municipal supply service management and water treatment.

At a press conference, the council signing the initiative, José Ignacio Tornel, argued that the board should consist of technical, social groups and political representatives, in order to analyze the feasibility of service redistricting.

Tornel indicated that water is a "common good foreign market rules" and access to it "a non-negotiable right", the application must be enforced without discrimination of any kind, and "less for reasons of an economic" .

He recalled that cities such as Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Vienna, Brussels and Paris have initiated processes to return to manage the supply and treatment of water from public authorities, which prevented or reduced private business participation.

In Spain have also given redistricting experiences of water service to "demonstrate that it is possible to maintain public management from a performance that guarantees the rights of citizens and also saves costs to city coffers."

"It is reasonable that, in terms of human rights and also in terms of economic efficiency, by political allegiance and citizenship responsibility, reflect on the possibility of returning to the full City Council water management," he added.

Councilman IU-Greens has requested in the motion that the conclusions of the commission are transferred to citizens through municipal boards and the City Council, to implement the objective of citizen participation "we all crave."

Stormwater Interceptor

Furthermore, Tornel has demanded the mayor, Miguel Ángel Cámara, that "once for all" requires the National Government to incorporate in the State Budget 2015 a game to undertake the first phase of stormwater interceptor in the north of Murcia.

Tornel has highlighted the need for this collector because when it rains, as it has in past days, the area is flooded.

The construction of the interceptor was referred to in Hydraulic Infrastructure Plan of the North Zone (PEIHN) that the City developed in 2004 to solve the problems of sewerage, sanitation and stormwater by new urban developments.

IU-Green made a motion in Parliament last March so that the City claimed the Environment Ministry, in charge of the works, including the interceptor as a priority project, which was approved unanimously.

The organization also requested, through an amendment to the 2014 PGE, which carry out the work, but rejected the central executive.
