The SmartSpaces, reference project for the United Nations (13/09/2014)

The city of Murcia is in luck, because the SmartSpaces project, which is conducted through the Department of Environment, has been named as an innovative benchmark project by the United Nations, in terms of energy savings in buildings in the Under the "Big Data by Climate Challenge" organized by the United Nations.

This international recognition is a great honor and value of the work performed in this European project since its inception in 2012, and the city of Murcia is part.

The "Big Data climate Challenge", organized by UN Global Pulse and Support Team Secretary General of Climate Change, aims to find solutions to climate change, based on data, and thus highlight the economic dimensions of climate change .

This theme is aligned with the Climate Summit UN to be held in New York on September 23, 2014, in which the Secretary-General shall convene world leaders in government, finance, business and civil society to catalyze action on climate change.

SmartSpaces, constituted by a European consortium which includes Bristol, leader of the initiative to participate in the awards of the UN, Murcia and nine other European cities, investigating ways to reduce energy consumption in public buildings by new technologies.

The project was co-financed by the European Commission and coordinated by the German company Empirica.

Part of SmartSpaces efforts are now focused on the use of smart metering data from municipal buildings of the cities involved in the project, which collect energy data from more than 550 participating buildings in the project.

Annually this translates to 40 million bits of data from the consumption of electricity, natural gas, oil and renewable resources.

Tracy Raczek, Senior Advisor Climate Policy in the Executive Office of the General Secretariat of the United Nations, said that "Big data helps us to understand more deeply how climate change may affect our economy, land, health and issues of inequality - with the ultimate goal of providing solutions, can be individuals, communities and policy makers to make more informed decisions. "

The city of Murcia is participating in the project with six emblematic municipal buildings, which has been implanted SmartSpaces Service: The Glorieta and its annex building, and Infante Complex (Local Police, Fire, Penalties and Civil Protection).

The Local Agency for Energy and Climate Change, under the Department of Environment, has coordinated the implementation of a series of easy to use tools for public employees who make energy data into information and simple graphics to interpret and thus help users to reduce their energy consumption.

All this with the support of an appropriate training and awareness campaigns managed from GER.

The results in the reduction of energy consumption obtained in recent years leave no doubt exceeded in some buildings up to 20% energy savings, all through appropriate technological tools and training.

Councillor for the Environment, Adela Martinez-Cache, "This award is another example of the international recognition of the work of Murcia for sustainability, environment and innovation.

Murcia will continue working towards environmental sustainability, reducing CO2 emissions and improving energy efficiency, and look forward to the opportunity to promote other projects and similar initiatives in our city. "
