A research group UCAM analyzes the correlation between consumption of cured ham and decreased blood pressure (02/09/2014)

Can the consumption of cured ham lower blood pressure?

This is one of the study areas in which the teacher is working at the Catholic University of Murcia, Silvia Montoro, who has been awarded with the prestigious European research program 'Marie Curie', for his work in biomedicine developed.

The project, funded by the 'William Harvey Research International Translational Academy' (WHRY-ACADEMY), is coordinated and managed by the UCAM and the London School of Medicine, faculty member at Queen Mary University of London.

As pointed out by Silvia Montoro, previous studies indicate that during the healing process of the ham release of bioactive peptides that are beneficial to the cardiovascular system occurs.

But adds hitherto been evaluated its effects in humans, nor the mechanisms by which occur for example, a decrease in vascular tension.

"We want to know how to operate various blood and vascular cells in response to consumption of these bioactive peptides in individuals with relatively high vascular tension, and associated with clinical and biochemical parameters," said the professor of the UCAM, adding that these developments will identify the key to the future development of functional foods points.

The research, which will last three years-from October 2014 until September 2017 will provide a positive impact on both the medical and economic sphere.

During the development of the various techniques such as cell culture, flow cytometry, proteomics and bioinformatics is deployed, in order to determine the molecular mechanisms involved in the effect of these peptides.

The UCAM and features a living cell culture and molecular biology lab full for the proper development of this and other major projects being carried out at present.

In assessing the application, besides the quality of the project presented, taking into account the center to which the researcher is incorporated, in this case, the UCAM.

The researcher joined the Department of Cardiovascular Risk UCAM, led by Dr. José Abellán in September 2013 with its own postdoctoral contract UCAM, a postdoctoral stage after almost 3 years in the prestigious University of Birmingham ( United Kingdom).

To Silvia Montoro is not a prize but a recognition of the work done, "and has been positively evaluated by a committee of international experts and funded, it is of course a compliment but also a responsibility. I am in the scientific obligation and moral to provide data to improve patient health and contribute to our society, "he says.

The focus of the UCAM with postdoctoral contracts is therefore evident: researcher repatriate and retain top talent internationally.

In this sense, the UCAM attracts researchers capable of being distinguished European contracts in recognition of its work and originality of the proposed project.

Outstanding Thesis Award

. Montoro Dr Silvia García received Honours Thesis in Biology and Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, also had been awarded previously with other national and international scholarships: Seneca Foundation (2005, 2010), Fundación Ramón Areces (2010) , Martín Escudero Foundation (2011), European Society of Cardiology (2012) and Institute of Health Carlos III (2013).

Obtaining this European contract is undoubtedly a breakthrough in their research career that will consolidate its research in the framework of a regional research center.
