Murcia is the first city in the region to comply with the fee of 5 percent of accessible taxis established by current legislation.

The capital now has 41 taxis adapted, representing 14.2 percent of the total fleet.

This is one of the results from the report 'State of the fleet of accessible taxis in towns of over 50,000 inhabitants in Spain.

July 2014 ', prepared by the ONCE Foundation and the Spanish Committee of Representatives of Persons with Disabilities (CERMI).

According to this study, which also analyzed the situation in the provincial capitals, only 25.8 percent of cities across Spain meet this requirement, which means that 74.2 percent of the municipalities there are fewer five taxis adapted for every 100 in the fleet.

Furthermore, in seven municipalities there is still no accessible taxi.

Councilman Traffic and Transportation, Javier Iniesta has welcomed the recognition of the ONCE and stated that "in the town are well above the 5 percent required by the regulations, and we always work closely with taxi drivers and associations of people with disabilities to ensure that all shifts have adapted taxis available. "

He also added that future licenses that could provide would achieve the objective of maintaining the proportionality of taxis adapted.

For the director of Universal Accessibility of ONCE Foundation, Jesús Hernández Galán, the existence of accessible taxis "is essential for many people with reduced mobility to move.

This is especially relevant in tourist destinations for tourists with disabilities to enjoy equal of those destinations. "

Also, Hernandez noted that the lack of transport accessibility is usually "one of the main problems in the chain of accessibility as it prevents people with disabilities to exercise this fundamental right."

Current law creating the basic conditions of accessibility and non-discrimination for access to and use of modes of transport for people with disabilities (Royal Decree 1544/2007 of 23 November) states regulating the Spanish municipalities over 50,000 inhabitants in 2017 should ensure this minimum quota of accessible taxis.

In the Region of Murcia, Molina de Segura also exceeds the quota.

This municipality currently has an accessible cab of the 13 that make up the fleet, representing 7.7 percent of the total.
