The Ministry of Culture and the Casino of Murcia pay tribute to the sculptor José Plans (15/07/2014)

The Ministry of Education, Culture and Universities and the Real Casino de Murcia today paid tribute to the sculptor José Planes, considered one of the most important in the sculptural landscape of the region in the last century.

Planes, who died in Espinardo today 40 years ago, won the National Sculpture Prize in 1932 and was appointed a member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in 1960.

The Director General of Cultural Property, Carmen Batres recalled the figure of the sculptor, who has left "an indelible mark" on the plastic arts in the Region of Murcia.

In the tribute, held at the Patio Pompeyano Real Casino de Murcia with one of his works, Batres was accompanied by the director of this institution, Juan Antonio Megías.

"Plans Joseph was a lover of his country and of art. Artworks, particularly their breasts and naked like this conserved in the Real Casino de Murcia, Mediterranean reveal their sensitivity and the influence of classical sculpture in style" he stressed.

"We are fortunate to have such an important legacy as he left José Planes loaded with modernity and pierced by an ideal of beauty that remains in place today," said the general director of Cultural Property.

José Plans (Murcia, 1891-1974) was born into a farming family in the path of Granada, in Espinardo, where he began his first modeling clay figures from the garden.

Her family realized her interest in art and sent him to teach drawing at the Catholic Workers' Circle of Murcia, where he studied with José María Sobejano.

He completed his studies in Madrid thanks to the patronage of Clemares Antonio and Juan de la Cierva.

There he began to harvest their first successes, as obtained in 1918 with an exhibition at the Ateneo de Madrid.

Two years later he received 15,000 pesetas for the sale of a play, 'Naked', the Casino de Murcia.

This work also would be awarded at the National Exhibition of that year.

In 1922 he won the second prize of the National Exhibition for the sculpture 'Offering a Lift'.

His great recognition would come ten years later, obtaining, in 1932, the National Sculpture Prize thanks to the work 'Nude'.

This distinction would be worth it, also being named Honorary Citizen of the city of Murcia.

In 1933 he returned to Murcia to found the School of Arts and Crafts and ten years later obtained the first medal of the National Exhibition.

In 1960 he was appointed member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, the most important art institution in the national cultural scene.

International recognition came with obtaining Venezuela Prize first Hispanic American Art Biennial of Sao Paulo and the second prize at the meeting in Havana.

He died in Espinardo the July 15, 1974.

José Plans has works spread over many squares and streets of some cities of the Region of Murcia and the rest of Spain.

The Museo de Bellas Artes de Murcia retains various works of the author and can be seen in the Regional Museum of Modern Art sculpture Teen Cartagena, dated around 1925, located in the courtyard entrance to the Aguirre Palace Cartagena.

In Murcia also made to highlight the sights and Jara Carrillo Fernández Caballero, besides the aforementioned 'Nude', exhibited at the Royal Casino and premiered at the National Exhibition of 1920.
