Mark World Environment Day to Combat Desertification enlargement Disfrimur agreement with the "Murcia CO2labora" project (18/06/2014)

The Department of Environment, directed Adela Martinez-Cache, this week wanted to commemorate the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, held on 17 June, with the renewal of the partnership agreement with the project company Disfrimur of "Murcia CO2labora".

Disfrimur offset the amount of 96,000 tons of CO2 equivalent generated by the activity of transport of goods this year by planting forest species under the Municipal Project collaboration offsetting "Project CO2labora Murcia".

According to this protocol, the Local Agency for Energy and Climate Change Murcia, GER, finds that, based on the methodology of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change IPCC 96,000 t of CO2 equivalent emitted will be compensated on a time horizon of 25 years by planting 2,000 copies of Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis).

So, GER proceed in the next planting period, to plant specimens indicated in the space reserved in New Javalí.

World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought

In 1994 the General Assembly of the United Nations declared 17 June as World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought (resolution 49/115 PDF Document) to promote public awareness of the issue, as well as commissioning action of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) PDF Document in countries affected either by severe droughts on desertification, or both, particularly in Africa.

The goal this year is to raise awareness about the potential of adapting ecosystem-based-that is, the conservation and enhancement of biodiversity and ecosystem services to increase ecological resilience and reduce the vulnerability of the population, as a strategy to address the effects of climate change, especially in drylands.

Ecosystems that are healthy are more resistant to the hazards of climate changes.

If your company wants to join the Murcia CO2labora program, please contact GER, Local Agency for Energy and Climate Change of the city of Murcia.
