Conference on Applications of Geographic Information Systems in the workplace (16/01/2014)

Professor of Criminology Research Center at the University of Castilla-La Mancha, Esther Fernández, has lectured on the application of GIS in the field of criminology

To know in which areas is higher the crime rate is one of the utilities of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), a subject which has been discussed this morning in the Days of application of this material in the workplace, which has held the Catholic University of Murcia with the company Esri.

Professor of Criminology Research Center at the University of Castilla-La Mancha, Esther Fernandez, who gave the conference 'Applications of GIS in criminological research.

An analysis of the spatial distribution of crime phenomenon in the city of Albacete ', stated in this regard that "right now, in many places, are being identified hot spots of crime, specific areas where crimes are occurring, allowing design an intervention strategy, and this is done daily in all Spanish cities ".

In respect of the use of Geographic Information Systems, Esther Fernandez said that in recent years these have provided a technology that has deepened in a greater way in explaining the criminal phenomenon.

"Today in New York, you go to a website and know where they have committed crimes that day, and this allows the police and those who have to fight crime, make an intervention that is much more affective as well as to establish prevention plans to prevent crime from occurring. "

Water Management

Another subject on which has been discussed during the conference, has been the use of GIS and Remote Sensing in Water Management.

Professor of Engineering School of CPC of Ciudad Real, Solomon Montesinos Aranda, said that "in the Region of Murcia, since 2005, the Segura basin agricultural water demand estimated by satellite imagery: the idea is to know exactly what resources are needed for all the issue of agriculture that exists in the area. "

Lack of training

The Chief of the Mapping Department of Public Works and Planning CARM, Pablo Ramón García, said that there is a lack of training in this area.

"For large projects highly skilled technicians are needed in geographic information systems, which are primarily used as a planning, development, management, and even monitoring of projects," he said.

Note that the UCAM has in its training catalog, as new, with the Proper title Geographic Information Systems with ArcGIS software, which will start delivering the next February by Esri, and Ramon Pablo Garcia is coordinator.
