A doctoral thesis at the University of Murcia relates the crisis of journalism as a business management (30/10/2013)

The doctoral dissertation at the University of Murcia by Mario Crespo Alcaraz has analyzed the change of social role journalism has experienced in recent decades and the current crisis in the media.

The author, after listing the dimensions of the crisis in the sector: low profitability of media companies, hearing loss, decreased volume of advertising, decline in the quality of information and the social prestige it places the origin of practices unethical business and the vision of journalism as a business rather than a public service.

"The corporate governance of journalism as a big business has led to a substantial change in the social role that citizens and democratic political systems assigned, dwarfing its social and agigantando private profit," says the study, which has been rated cum laude.

"Productivism and economic returns, adds today guide the management of media, business investment that direct technological applications to the detriment of the quality of the content and stability of journalistic templates".

The work also refers to the loss of autonomy of journalists in newsrooms, as well as their influence on the final presentation of the information, "the professionals, says the author, face both internal pressure from their bosses to not to damage the economic interests allied with the company as to the limitations imposed by productivism, self-censorship and poor working conditions. "

For its part, the audience suffers an alienation process information, which contrasts with the increase of self-determination of individuals, expressed in reactions such as journalism or citizen journalism 3.0.

The author referred to in the thesis a future marked by technology, a return of greater complexity and behavior of audiences more active and less massive.

In conclusion, the study, which was led by Professor Emilio Martínez Navarro, advocates for journalistic ethics and quality of content to build a new information system to recover the balance between the social and business profit.
