The CHS confirms the presence of an otter on the Segura River near the city of Murcia (25/07/2013)

The settlement of this mustelid certifies the quality of the waters of the river and the recovery of wildlife through debugging

The Segura basin (CHS) has confirmed the presence of an otter (Lutra lutra) in the Segura river channel near the city of Murcia, Barriomar area downstream of the Contraparada.

The Riverside Nursery the Water Board of the CHS has managed to document its presence through camera trapping chambers with heat and motion sensors, which managed to capture images yesterday morning of an adult, for about six kilos, while realized of a crayfish.

The settlement of this mustelid certifies the excellent water quality and recovery of fauna and flora, thanks to the efforts in the last decade in the field of wastewater treatment by the different administrations with jurisdiction in the matter (CHS, Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia and municipalities) and the maintenance of ecological flow.

This major commitment to treatment and reuse has allowed the river Segura happen in little more than ten years of being listed as the most polluted river in Spain to have undetectable levels of contamination.

Thus, in the last four years, the parameter measuring organic pollution-biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) - is less than 3 milligrams per liter in all sections of the river, from its source to the mouth, which is considered in the virtual absence of contaminants.
