New complaint planting invasive species (22/07/2013)

The organization requesting the cooperation of citizens to locate new sites with presence of this invasive species to prevent its spread into the wild

Ecologists in Action has returned to denounce the planting of numerous specimens of Pennisetum setaceum [1], included in the Spanish Catalogue of Invasive Alien Species in medium and enclosures located on Highway F-19, at the height of the "La New Tertia "located in the hamlet of La Tertia, municipality of Murcia.

For the association the worst of the situation is not only the fact that the planting of Pennisetum setaceum is expressly prohibited in the natural environment, including linear transport infrastructure and roads, as expressed Transitional Provision for the species ornamental nurseries.

For ecologists, the most serious is that it is possible to observe many specimens at the margins of the road that have evidently arisen from seed dispersal of trees planted, which means that it is spreading this invasive species out of space which has been planted as an ornamental, and despite the express prohibition of it.

Ecologists in Action, with this complaint primarily seeks urgent and immediate withdrawal of these copies, because right now are in full period of fruiting and seed maturation, which is essential to the elimination and subsequent monitoring to ensure the complete disappearance of potential propagules in the environment.

And this fact becomes very important when taking into account the proximity of protected natural area Carrascoy Regional Park-El Valle, which is also SCI and SPA, which testifies to its importance to the environmental level.

Finally, the association wanted to appeal to all citizens to help them locate all sources of dispersion of this species and to develop a regional map and the presence of this invasive plant, in order to facilitate eradication efforts of the species in the wild.

To do this, the association requests to be send by mail or Facebook with the following information:
