Four athletes from the University of Murcia participate in the Universiade to be held in Russia from 6 to July 17 (01/07/2013)

Alberto Martinez Navarro, Guillermo Lopez Ros, José Antonio Vera Rabadán Iniesta and Ortega, are the names of the four students of the University of Murcia to participate this July in the Universiade 2013, to be held in the Russian city of Kazan.

The first three are students of the Faculty of Sport Sciences, while the latter is a graduate student at that university.

The four involved in wrestling mode, one of the 23 sports that brings this important appointment with the sport that brings together the best college athletes worldwide.

The first three have participated today in a press meeting which was held in the building of Convalescence, accompanied by the Rector José Antonio Cobacho; Antonio Penalver, CEO of Physical Activity and Sport of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, José María López Gullón, President of the Federation of Olympic Fights and Associated Disciplines of the Region of Murcia and professor at the University of Murcia, Mercedes Farias Batlle, Vice Chancellor of University Extension and eGovernment, M ª Ángeles Esteban, Vice Chancellor and Coordination Communication and Aurelio Olmedilla Zafra, Director of Sports Activities at the University of Murcia.

The director of the Sports, Aurelio Olmedilla, said that since the institution "will upport to our athletes to stay in Kazan as pleasant as possible."

Meanwhile, Mead Gullón, President of the Olympic Wrestling Federation stressed the high level of competition of the Universiade, adding that "many of those involved in it have already been in the Olympics."

He said also that it is a milestone for the University of Murcia, because "for the first time the center has students participating in this sporting event."

Gullón, who said he and the rest of the team were leaving to Madrid and the Russian city of Kazan shortly after the press conference ended by saying that "we hope to bring a medal to Murcia".

A desire shared by the three members of the Spanish team participating in the presentation, which they said they were proud to represent their university and their country in this important event.

Antonio Penalver, CEO of Sports stressed in his speech the highly competitive level of these tests and said "just being in them is as important."

The Rector of the University of Murcia, meanwhile, congratulated the fighters present for having "managed to reconcile their studies and training" and wished everyone good luck in their respective matches.

Second sporting event in the world

The Universiade is an international sporting event held every two years, each time in a different city.

Only the Olympic Games have more participation.

Most Universiade held so far in terms of number of participants was the Shenzhen 2011 in China, where 10,622 athletes gathered, although Daegu is held in Korea in 2003 in Korea, which holds the record participation, with 174 countries.

The Universiade 2013, to be held this year from 6 to July 17, is expected to draw more than 13,500 athletes and members of delegations from 170 countries.

"Excellence in Mind and Body" is the motto of FISU (International University Sports Federation), which incorporates educational and cultural aspects in the 12 days of sports competitions, allowing college student-athletes from around the world share each host city a true spirit of friendship and sportsmanship.
